American College & University Presidents Climate Commitment
Dr. Larry L. Earvin, President
Dr. Larry Earvin, President and CEO of Huston-Tillotson University (HT) signed the Presidents Climate Commitment Plan to launch an effort to reduce HTs carbon footprint.
The first step was to establish an institutional framework to manage the University's efforts. Dr. Earvin asked the existing Environmental Health and Safety Committee to oversee this project. This committee consists of faculty from Biology, Psychology, and Kinesiology as well as the directors of Counseling, Disability Services, Campus Health, Residence Halls, Campus Safety, and Campus Facilities. Students are members of this committee.
The next step is to measure the Greenhouse Gas Emissions on campus. Ms. Gail Maduro, a senior biology major is undertaking this as a class project. Using data from 2008, she will analyze campus conditions. She will present her findings at the Beta Kappa Chi Scientific Honor Societys meeting in March and at the Universitys Research Day in April.
Within the next two years we will develop an institutional action plan to become more Carbon neutral.
